Today I had my first pomegranate in the States. It was so wonderful to have the night before I go to visit my family and best friend.
There is nothing like pomegranate. The struggle it takes to open it, and the mixture of the bitter and sweet of the seeds. What a beautiful creation.

I am sick

I want the following things, delivered to my room, ASAP:

  • My mother
  • soup
  • sleeping pills for me to be able to sleep until Wednesday when I leave for Minnesota. Would that be dangerous?

Tonight, I went to a poetry slam.

I’m not one for extending my vowels, but it was AMAAAAAZIIIIIING… If any of you ever get the chance to go see Elephant Engine High Dive Revival (Anis Mojgani, Derrick Brown, Michael McGee, and Buddy Wakefield) DO IT… these guys were great. They mixed the perfect amount of hilarious with serious (hileriousness). One of the poets came to me after and gave me his book of poems that he had been reading from… it was such a beautiful gesture. It was definitely my favorite night at college so far.

My roommate

will not stop listening to the same Fray song over and over again. I want to punch myself with a brick.

No radiance can compare with that of justice. The organization of the world and the tranquility of mankind depend upon it.

Falafel is just as important. What peanut butter and jelly is to white people, is what falafel and hummus is to Middle Easterners.

- Fatima (via a-reza)

Every time they serve a “mezza bar” in the cafeteria at school with weird nutty hummus and some crappy pita, I say “Americans just shouldn’t even TRY with Middle Eastern food.” My friends are really sick of me saying it, needless to say.

I miss that good hummus, shishlik, shwarma, falafel, fattoush.. topped off with some amba sauce.

Our diversity, not only in our Army but in our country, is a strength, and as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.

General Casey, about the Fort Hood shooting in relation to prejudice towards those of Muslim faith.

Taken from an article in today’s New York Times, print — “A Hard Time for Muslims to Serve Their Country.”

saltblock:

The other day, I picked up a church pamphlet off the surface of Canal St.  On the very back was this Chinese proverb:  ’He who is drowned is not troubled by the rain.’  I thought it ironic that the page was soaked through so that both sides could be read clearly.  On the other side, the page said:  ’No wind, no waves.’  This is the photo I took just after finding and then pocketing the pamphlet. peon.

Okay so my brother Na’im and his buddy Ray started a blog. It is amazing. I suggest you all follow the crap out of it because it really is awesome — not just from the I’m his sister point of view, but it has some great stuff on it. The drawings are all my brother’s and the photos are Ray’s.

"Revolution"

Wearing a t-shirt that says “Free Tibet” or a wristband that says “Free Palestine” is not going to save any Tibetans or Palestinians. I feel like the only purpose of people wearing those is to show others how liberal and caring they are.
